In preparation for seeing Eternals tonight I decided to revisit my rankings of the films of the MCU to include Black Widow and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. I did the rankings over five articles which I will put the links to below, nothing has changed except where I inserted the two new films. In my review of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings review I felt it added a lot to the MCU and it setup some interesting stuff for the future. I think the family based storytelling made the film work, it seems fitting that it sits where it is on my rankings. Based on my review, Shang-Chi found itself wedged between Black Panther (8th) and Guardians of the Galaxy (6th) at seventh place. I think the cast of Shang-Chi was excellent in the movie and I am excited for their next appearance in the MCU. I really wanted to like Black Widow, but in my review I took issue with the fact that it should have been made earlier and it did not connect with me like I would have hoped it would. I placed Black Widow eighteenth on the list between Avengers: Age of Ultron (17th) and Iron Man (19th). Looking at the rankings I feel bad that Iron Man is so low, but there are good things about Black Widow (the cast and the action). I don't think there has been a truly terrible MCU film yet, but I will say the Iron Man is the last of the good films on the list.
After the cast and director was announced for Eternals my excitement started increasing, Chloe Zao was directing with Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Richard Madden and Kumail Nanjiani as the stars. Eternals is based on a comic created by the great Jack Kirby in 1976, that follows a group of extraterrestrials who have been living on earth for centuries. I admit that I have never seen a Chloe Zao film, but I know they are considered great films and I think Marvel getting her to direct was a major win for the studio. I am curious about the cast, I have not been an Angelina Jolie fan for some time, I really enjoy Salma Hayek and I think Kumail Nanjiani (watch Silicon Valley) is hilarious. Richard Madden and Kit Harrington come from the Game of Thrones universe and I am curious to see how they are in the MCU. Gemma Chan (Crazy Rich Asians and Captain Marvel) has been tabbed as the leading actor of the film, I don't believe she has been the star of a blockbuster and I hope she nails it out of the park. I am very excited for the future of the MCU and I am curious how Shang-Chi and the Eternals fit in with the rest of the MCU.
Thank you for reading and stay tuned for my review of Eternals.
