Philippines Mourns the Passing of Former President Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino III

The former Philippine president Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III died peacefully in his sleep and pronounced dead on June 24, 2021, at Capitol Memorial Medical Center, 6:30 AM due to renal disease secondary to diabetes, the Aquino family said.

"Mission accomplished, ka Noy! Be happy now with mom and Dad", said sister Pinky Aquino Abellada in their family official statement.


The news of the untimely demise of the former President shocked the nation and left the Filipinos in deep grief. Many people paid their tributes and sent their condolences.

President Rodrigo Duterte led by extending his deepest sympathy to his family and loved ones. National mourning is also declared under Proclamation No. 1169 for 10 days after the former President's death. The proclamation is from June 24 to July 3 and these days, the flags from all different government buildings in the Philippines and abroad are being raised half-mast from sunrise to sunset. 

The President said, "Let us take this opportunity to unite in prayer and set aside our differences as we pay respects to a leader who has given his best to serve the Filipino people". He added, "His memory and his family's legacy of offering their lives for the cause of democracy will forever remain etched in our hearts".

Bam Aquino said, "Mahal ka namin, Pnoy! Maraming salamat at paalam.

 "Nakakadurog ng puso and balitang wala an si Pnoy", this is the statement of Vice President Leni Robredo.

On the other hand, Jejomar Binay said, "Noynoy and I may have had different political differences during the last few years of his term but that will not diminish the many years of friendship between our families" 

Former Senator Bongbong Marcos, son of the late former President Ferdinand Marcos, also joined the nation in mourning for the former President's death.

Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III is the 15th Philippine President from 2010-2016. He was 61. He is the only son of  the country's democracy icons of former senator Ninoy Aquino and former President Corazon Aquino.
